Newman qualifies for U.S. Amateur
In Atlanta, Carter Newman, of Evans, was one of six players at Piedmont Driving Club on Wednesday to qualify for the 110th U.S. Amateur Championship.
The Augusta State golfer shot 67-69 in the two-day event and finished tied for second, one shot behind medalist Bill Jones III, of Covington, Ga.
The U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 23-29 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.
- In Hawkinsville, Ga., Walker Bottomley, of Evans, shot 82 during the final round of the Georgia Junior Sectional Match at Southern Hills Golf Club.
Bottomley, who like all local players was competing for the East section, tied for third in the 12-13-year-old division.
Also in that division, Evans' Jack Rautenstrauch shot a second consecutive 83 and finished 14th, while Lee Justice (86-81), of Hephzibah, tied for 15th.
In the 16-17 division, Martinez's Patrick Flake (81-79) tied for 10th, Evans' Brent Roberson (79-92) tied for 17th and Martinez's Charles Kirby (84-89) tied for 18th.
Carson Spears, of Augusta, was the top local player in the 14-15 division, shooting 80 to tie for seventh. Evans' Taylor Guilbeau (83-79) tied for 13th, and Augusta's Austin Knox (91-80) tied for 18th. David Hemann, of Evans, withdrew.
In the 11-and-under division, Will Radford, of Evans, shot 46 over nine holes and finished tied for 14th at 87.
In the girls 12-13 division, Macy Cochran, of Evans, had 40 over nine holes and tied for sixth at 88, while Rylie Marchman (47-46), of Waynesboro, Ga., finished ninth.
And Ragan Bailey (58-53), also of Waynesboro, finished sixth in the girls 11-and-under division.
- In Clemson, S.C., Will Watson and Ivey Mischel, both of Evans, each finished second in their age group at the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Clemson University Junior Shootout at the Walker Course.
Watson (74-79--153) finished three strokes behind Hunter Parks (76-74 --150), of Buffalo, S.C., in the boys 13-15 division. In the girls 15-19 division, Mischel (84-78--162) finished five shots behind Libby Crawford (75-82--157).
In the boys 16-19 division, Brandon Jowers, of Shalimar, Fla., sank a birdie on the fourth playoff hole to seal the victory. Evans' Taylor Gove finished fourth, one shot back of the leaders.

Girls AAU tourney returns to Augusta
The Garden City Roundball Classic, featuring some of the top AAU girls basketball talent in the country, returns to Augusta today.
The NCAA-certified tournament kicks off with games at Evans High at 3:15 p.m. and Evans Middle School at 4:30 p.m. The tournament moves to Evans High and Augusta State on Friday, and to USC Aiken on Saturday. AAU and travel teams 10U-17U are eligible to participate.
- USA Basketball trimmed its roster of candidates for the world championships to 15, a group that features Brook Lopez and Tyson Chandler as its only centers.
Boxing
Club invites public to sparring matches
The Augusta Boxing Club is inviting the public to its monthly sparring matches today.
Participants will be members of the club's beginner and intermediate classes, ages 7 and up. Although classified as sparring, the atmosphere will be of actual competition. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. at 1929 Walton Way and is free of charge.

Maradona claims he was betrayed
Diego Maradona says he was lied to and betrayed by Argentina soccer officials who decided not to renew his contract as coach of the national team.
The former superstar whose team was beaten by Germany in a quarterfinal, said national team director Carlos Bilardo and association president Julio Grondona worked to get rid of him.
- In Houston, Federico Macheda twice in the first 13 minutes and Mexico's Javier Hernandez found the net in his Manchester United debut as the Premier League club routed the MLS All-Stars team 5-2.
