Ninth-inning homer tops GreenJackets
In Charleston, S.C., Robert Lyerly hit a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the RiverDogs a 3-1 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets on Wednesday.
Lyerly's homer, his third of the season, came off Augusta reliever Wilmin Rodriguez (1-2).
Tommy Joseph homered in the fifth for the GreenJackets only run. It was his 12th of the season.
Reed romps in first Public Links match
In Greensboro, N.C., Augusta's Patrick Reed beat Travis Gahman, of Souderton, Pa., 7 and 6 Wednesday in a first-round match in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Bryan Park Golf & Conference Center.
The Augusta State golfer tied for second in 36 holes of stroke play qualifying and is the No. 3 seed, while Gahman was the No. 62 seed.
Reed will face 35th-seeded Alex Edfort , of Somerset, N.J., who needed 20 holes to beat 30th-seeded Garren Poirier , of Killington, Vt., at 9 a.m. today.
- In Birmingham, Ala., Lee Knox , of Augusta, shot 1-under-par 71 and is tied for 26th after the first round of the 104th Southern Amateur Championship at Shoal Creek.
The University of Alabama golfer, who won the Georgia Amateur Championship in Savannah, Ga., last weekend, trails leader Cheng Tsung Pan, of Taiwan, by six shots.
University of Georgia golfer Russell Henley, who tied for low amateur at the U.S. Open, had 70 and is tied for 13th.
Derek Chang , who transferred to Augusta State from the University of Minnesota, shot 73.
- Aiken native Matt Hendrix shot 6-under-par 65 and is in a three-way tie for second place after the first round of the eGolf Tour's Southern Open.
The tournament is being played at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C., and Warrior Golf Club in China Grove, N.C.
Colton Turnquist , of Bradenton, Fla., leads by one after 64.
Aiken's Alex Hamilton and former Augusta State golfer Jay Haas Jr. are the only other players with local ties in the top 20. Both shot 68s and are tied for 18th.
North Augusta's Kyle Bradley and former Aiken resident Hugh Royer III, who now lives in Myrtle Beach, S.C., had 69s.
Former USC Aiken golfer Justin Thompson shot 70, ex-Augusta State golfer Keith Guest had 71, and former USC Aiken golfer Kevin Grady shot 72.
David Robinson , of Sandersville, Ga., had 73 and ex-Augusta Prep golfer Cortland Lowe and former USC Aiken golfer Scott Usher shot 74s.
Outfielder will join Lady Pacers squad
Brittney Williamson , an outfielder from Lexington, S.C., has signed a national letter of intent to play softball at USC Aiken.
Williamson, who made the roster for North-South All-Star Game, batted .424 with 25 stolen bases during her senior season at White Knoll High.
- Recent USC Aiken graduate Casey McMasters was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court, which recognizes student-athletes who excelled in the classroom during the 2009-10 season.
McMasters, who graduated in May with a bachelor of science degree in business administration, had a cumulative 3.241 GPA. On the court, he averaged 9.8 points.
Late flurry lifts Lynx to victory vs. Dream
In Minneapolis, Nicky Anosike had 16 points, a late steal and an assist to Rebekkah Brunson for the go-ahead layup with 7.2 seconds left to lift the Minnesota Lynx to an 83-81 victory over the Atlanta Dream.
"Just the way we drew it up," teammate Lindsay Whalen said.
Seimone Augustus scored 22 points and Whalen added 17 points for Minnesota (7-11) in this once-a-year midweek matinee, delighting the thousands of screaming kids on summer break after the Lynx squandered a 14-point first-half lead.
Iziane Castro Marques had 20 points for Atlanta.
