Kountakis rallies to win event in Chapin
In Chapin, S.C., Emmanuel Koutakis , of Augusta, shot a second-round 71 to win the Jackson Brothers Farms Junior Open 16-19 age division by two strokes.
In the first round, Koutakis and Taylor Guilbeau , of Martinez, both shot 74 and were six shots behind leader Sam Jackson , of Pelion, S.C. Guilbeau shot 80 in the second round to finish third for the event, behind Jackson. Brian Campbell , of Aiken, shot 77 and 81 to finish in fifth.
The event was held at Timberlake Country Club as part of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour.
- In Kiawah Island, S.C., the Augusta State women's golf team carded a 19-over par 307 in the second round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic and has a four-stroke lead over East Tennesse State and East Carolina.
Tamara Luccioli shot 1-under 71 in the second round and is tied for fourth place at even-par 144 with Sarah Mooney , who shot 76 a day after a 4-under 68 gave her the individual lead.
The round at Oak Point Golf Club was delayed for more than an hour because of rain.
- In Hilton Head, S.C., the USC-Aiken men's golf team shot 11-over 299 on the first day of the fifth annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate at the Wexford Plantation Course, and is tied for sixth with Ohio and DePaul.
College Softball
Aiken Tech cancels its softball season
Aiken Technical College announced that it has canceled its 2009-10 women's fast-pitch softball season.
A news release issued Monday said that Aiken Tech could not field a team because several players were suffering from injuries and others had been suspended for rules violations.
The team is recruiting and plans to return to action next year.
Basketball
Augusta Bulldogs take home awards
Several members of the Augusta Bulldogs Wheelchair Basketball team took home awards at the season banquet this weekend in Raleigh, N.C.
Chris Bryant was named division MVP and all-conference class three player, Jason Hitt was named all-conference class one player and Darren Jackon was named all-conference class two player.
Bryant will play wheelchair basketball at the University of Arizona next year.
The Bulldogs ended the season with a 5-5 record and in second place in the Southern Division of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association's seven-team Carolina Conference.
Baseball
Ex-All Star to speak at annual reunion
The annual reunion of former American Legion and city league baseball players will be held 6:30 p.m. Thursday at American Legion Post 63 on Milledge Road.
Ransom Jackson , a two-time All Star who played for the Chicago Cubs, Brooklyn Dodgers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Indians, will be the featured speaker at the invitation-only gathering.

Wife charged with assaulting Ric Flair
Police say the wife of pro wrester Ric Flair has been charged with assaulting him in their North Carolina home.
Police charged 41-year-old Jacqueline Beems with simple assault. She was released from jail a few hours after her arrest.
