Paine women score road win in Albany

In Albany, Ga., Areyal LaDeatte had 15 points and eight rebounds as the Paine College women rolled over Albany State 52-40 in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Thursday night.

Paine is 6-18, 5-16 in the SIAC.

In a tightly-contested men's game, Paine couldn't hold on to a one-point halftime lead and lost 53-52.

Geno Green had 14 points and seven rebounds for Paine (8-18, 8-15 SIAC). Najee Tolbert added 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Golf

Canadian is on top in eGolf's opener

In Hilton Head Island, S.C., Canada's Matt McQuillan is the clubhouse leader in the darkness-delayed Palmetto Hall Championship.

For the second consecutive day, a portion of the field didn't complete play in the eGolf Tour's season-opener.

McQuillan did finish his two rounds, adding 69 to his opening 66. He's at 9-under 135. Chris Gallagher is second at 69-69--138.

Area players to complete two rounds are Kyle Bradley (72-76--148), Scott Parel (74-75--149), Keith Guest (76-75--151), Jeffrey Goff (77-78--155), and Jordan Johnstun (77-79--156). Matt Hendrix withdrew after an opening 69.

Those who will have to return at 8 this morning to complete their second round are Alex Hamilton (first round 67), Dane Burkhart (71), Michael Green (72), Adam McKenney (73), Cortland Lowe (75), Jay Haas Jr. (75), Wallace Booth (76), Scott Usher (78), Emmett Turner (80) and David Robinson (81).

The cut will be made after the completion of the second round today, to be followed by the start of the third round.

Softball

USC Aiken suffers first loss of season

In Newberry, S.C., USC Aiken lost its first game of the season but came back to beat Newberry to split a doubleheader.

Newberry won the first game 2-1, ending the Pacers four-game winning streak to start the season. USC Aiken won the nightcap 8-1 as designated hitter Toni Flessate had two hits and three RBI.

On Wednesday, the Lady Pacers swept a twinbill from Erskine, 3-1 and 6-3.

Tennis

Pacers split a pair of matches on road

In Misenheimer, N.C., USC Aiken's teams split their matches with Pfeiffer.

The 17th-ranked USC Aiken men's team won 7-2 but the Lady Pacers lost 5-4.

The USC Aiken men are 3-1 and the women 2-1.

Lawsuit vs. NFL will go to trial in March

The closely watched labor fight between the NFL and two members of the Minnesota Vikings who challenged their drug-related suspensions will go to trial next month.

A Minnesota judge ruled Thursday that a lawsuit over the NFL's suspensions of Vikings defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams will go to trial March 8 to settle some employment issues, including whether the NFL, the Vikings -- or both -- are the players' employer for purposes of drug testing.

Appeal by Togo is dismissed by court

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has dismissed an appeal from the Togo soccer federation to be included in the qualifying draw for the African Cup of Nations.
