Paine teams swept at Fort Valley State
In Fort Valley, Ga., Fort Valley State rallied in the second half to beat Paine College 57-52 on Tuesday night in an Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.
The Lions (8-17, 8-14 SIAC) led 31-29 at the half but shot only 26 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes.
Fort Valley State's Darrell Aiken led all scorers with 14 points. Steven Gill added 12 for the Wildcats (8-16, 6-15 SIAC).
Thomas Broughton was the only Paine player in double figures with 10.
In the women's game, Fort Valley State (23-1, 18-1 SIAC) built a 16-point halftime lead and held on for a 58-50 victory.
Takesha Riggs scored 12 points to lead Fort Valley State.
Paine's Antionette McPhail led all scorers with 15. Areyal LaDeatte added 11 and Shanee' Butler 10 for the Lady Lions (5-18, 4-16 SIAC).

- Dana Kirk , who coached the Memphis State Tigers to a 1985 men's basketball Final Four appearance that was vacated because of NCAA violations, has died. He was 74.

Winter horse trials scheduled in Aiken
The 18th annual Paradise Farm Winter Horse Trials will take place Friday through Sunday at Paradise Farm on Wagener Road in Aiken.
More than 300 competitors are expected for the event, which will feature dressage, show jumping and cross-country equestrian and is recognized by the United States Equestrian Federation and United States Eventing Association.

- Betty L. Mabee , who with her late husband, John , helped build one of the West Coast's major thoroughbred breeding operations and played a key role in the blossoming of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and Del Mar racetrack, has died. She was 88.
Her son, Larry , said his mother died Monday after an extended illness at her home in nearby Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
