Madgen named PBC Player of the Week

Augusta State senior guard Ben Madgen was named the Peach Belt Conference's Player of the Week Monday.

The award is his third of the season and the sixth of his career.

Madgen helped lead the No. 7 Jaguars to a 3-0 record last week, averaging 21.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Following a 17-point, five-rebound effort in an 82-77 victory at UNC Pembroke on Feb. 8, Madgen busted out with his biggest game of the year, 28 points against Georgia College and State. He also scored 19 points Saturday against Montevallo.

- USC Aiken will induct four new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday.

Dr. James Barham (former team doctor), Jami Cornwell (softball and women's basketball), Derek Moore (men's basketball) and Dru McPherson Nix (women's basketball and volleyball) will join the 13-member inaugural class that was inducted in 2007.

The evening will begin at 6 with a social in the lobby of the convocation center, followed by dinner at 7 and then the ceremony.

- USC Aiken will hold a special Black Out -- Fight for Sight Night as part of the men's and women's basketball doubleheader against UNC Pembroke at the convocation center, beginning Wednesday at 5:30. The evening will be held in honor of USC Aiken all-time leading women's scorer Meredith Legg , who was diagnosed with a rare form of Melanoma eye cancer only weeks after finishing her career.

To help raise funds and awareness for Melanoma Research, the USC Aiken athletic department is asking everyone to wear black to the doubleheader. Black is the official color of Melanoma cancer.

All proceeds will go towards Melanoma Research.

- In Graniteville, Brandon Roland scored 16 points and Anthony Rapley added 13 to lead Aiken Tech to a 75-65 basketball victory over Denmark Tech.

Outfielder Willy Tavera s agreed to a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals.

- Outfielder Endy Chavez agreed to a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers.

Sidney's Candy back in picture for Derby

In Arcadia, Calif., Sidney's Candy soared back into the Kentucky Derby picture Monday night with a victory over Tiny Woods and Classical Slew in Santa Anita's 69th running of the seven-furlong $150,000 San Vicente Stakes for 3-year-olds.

Ridden by Joe Talamo , Sidney's Candy matched strides early with trainer Bob Baffert 's Tiny Woods before leaving his rival behind 4 1/4 lengths when crossing the wire in 1:20.91.

Seven years after leaving Manchester United, David Beckham faces the team that turned him into a global star for the first time when AC Milan plays host to the three-time winners in the Champions League.

Milan takes on United today as the Champions League resumes after a two-month break.

Israel's Peer rallies for victory at Dubai

In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Shahar Peer rallied to beat 15th-ranked Yanina Wickmayer, of Belgium, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 in her opening match at the Dubai Tennis Championships, a year after the Israeli player had been denied a visa to the Emirates.

Authorities had cited safety reasons for preventing Peer from playing last year.

Making a quick exit was 15th-seeded Nadia Petrova . The Russian lost 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) to Swiss wildcard Stefanie Voegele .

- In Memphis, Tenn., Maria Sharapova routed Shenay Perry 6-0, 6-2 in the Cellular South Cup.

The top-seeded Sharapova used her strength to move Perry and keep her off balance.
