Cleveland rookie Johnny Manziel (right) completed 7 of 11 passes for 63 yards in his first preseason action Friday.

Coach Mike Pettine said he isn’t ready to choose a starting quarterback for Cleveland’s second preseason game Aug. 18 in Washington, but plans to have a regular-season starter set before the third preseason game, Aug. 23 against St. Louis.

Hoyer is listed atop the Browns’ depth chart and started Saturday in Detroit. He completed 6 of 14 passes for 92 yards, leading the first-team offense to two field goals in three drives.

Manziel was 7 of 11 for 63 yards while playing most of the second quarter and all of the third. He drove Cleveland’s second- and third-teamers to one field goal in four possessions.

REDSKINS: Coach Jay Gruden says DeAngelo Hall is “just a little sore” with a bruised back after an awkward landing during training camp practice.

The three-time Pro Bowl cornerback somersaulted and landed on his back while defending Andre Roberts in a one-on-one drill Sunday. Hall was carted off the field.

Gruden said Hall was “walking around a little bit better, just a little sore.” The coach said he doesn’t expect Hall to be sidelined for long.

JETS: Cornerback Dee Milliner was helped from the practice field Sunday after injuring his left ankle.

A half-hour earlier, rookie Dexter McDougle was carted off after tearing a ligament in his left knee.

VIKINGS: Hired Joe Marciano to fill in for special teams coordinator Mike Priefer, who must serve a three-game suspension for an anti-gay comment.
