Houston Texans inside linebacker Brian Cushing given the OK to play

Houston Texans inside linebacker Brian Cushing passed each step of the NFL’s concussion protocol and will play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

“Everything went real smooth, there were no setbacks or anything like that,” Cushing said Friday. “Pretty much the general consensus was that I’d be OK.”

Cushing suffered the concussion while making a tackle for a 1-yard loss on running back Marshawn Lynch during the Texans’ 23-20 overtime loss to Seattle last Sunday.

This is Cushing’s first concussion, and he said he appreciated the care taken with making sure he was ready to return.

BILLS: Quarterback EJ Manuel has a lateral collateral ligament sprain in his right knee that will keep him out a few weeks, coach Doug Marrone said Friday.

Manuel’s injury, which occurred on a third-quarter scramble in the Bills’ 37-24 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night, will not require surgery.

PATRIOTS: Running back Stevan Ridley has been ruled out for the team’s game Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals after not practicing this week because of a knee injury.

It’s unclear when Ridley specifically suffered the injury, as he finished Week 4 with his most productive rushing total during the
2013 season.

For the third consecutive week, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski (back/forearm) and wide receiver Danny Amendola (groin) are listed as questionable.

RAIDERS: Darren McFadden missed a third consecutive day of practice because of a hamstring injury, making it all but certain Oakland will be without its top running back for Sunday night’s game against San Diego.

McFadden has been sidelined since getting hurt early in the first half of Oakland’s 24-14 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sept. 29.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Friday that McFadden’s status would be a game-time decision.
