Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was fined $100,000 by the NFL for his illegal low block in the season-opening victory over the Minnesota Vikings last weekend.

NFL spokesman Randall Liu says vice president of football operations Merton Hanks notified the Detroit defensive tackle of the fine. Suh hit Vikings center John Sullivan during an interception return, drawing a penalty that negated a touchdown by Detroit linebacker DeAndre Levy.

STEELERS: Former Georgia Tech star Jonathan Dwyer, re-signed on Monday after the team lost LaRod Stephens-Howling for the season because of a knee injury, could play a significant role when Pittsburgh travels to Cincinnati next Monday night, coach Mike Tomlin said.

• The team signed veteran Fernando Velasco, a former Jefferson County and Georgia standout, on Monday, after Maurkice Pouncey tore ligaments in his right knee in Sunday’s loss to the Titans.

Utility lineman Kelvin Beachum will get the first shot at replacing Pouncey.

GIANTS: Brandon Jacobs signed a one-year deal to return to the team, adding veteran experience and depth to a running back corps that was lacking both.

PATRIOTS: Will be without leading rusher Shane Vereen for Thursday night’s game against the Jets after he was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a designation to return.

He must miss eight games and would be eligible to play on Nov. 18 against the Carolina Panthers. He broke his left wrist in the opener and had surgery Monday.

Wide receiver Danny Amendola is almost likely to miss Thursday night’s game because of a groin injury, although it is too early to rule him out, a league source told ESPN.
