Cooper, in his fourth year out of the University of Florida, seemed remorseful during an eight-minute news conference with the media after the Eagles and New England Patriots began what will be a three-day practice routine before Friday night’s preseason opener.
“It’s great to be back doing what I love to do, play football,” Cooper said. “I realize being in the NFL you have responsibility to behave on and off the field. I realize that.”
“I realize how many people I hurt, how many families I hurt, how many kids I hurt. It’s going to be tough. I’m going to live with this every day the rest of my life. It’s one of those things you can’t let affect your play on the field.”
Last Friday, Eagles coach Chip Kelly announced that Cooper was given time off to seek counseling.
FALCONS: Right tackle Mike Johnson was carted off the practice field and onto an ambulance with an apparent left leg injury.
Johnson, listed first on the depth chart at his position, was injured on a running play Tuesday.
Linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, the team’s second-leading tackler last season, suffered an open dislocated finger on his left hand Tuesday and will be out indefinitely.
The Falcons said Weatherspoon did not break any bones in the hand.
Wide receiver Julio Jones missed practice with a hamstring injury and will miss Thursday’s preseason opener against Cincinnati.
PACKERS: Wide receiver Jordy Nelson will miss the rest of training camp after undergoing a procedure on one of his knees. He joins a laundry list of Packers on the sideline, including left tackle Bryan Bulaga, who is expected to miss the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in one of his knees.
• The team has signed quarterback Vince Young.
The Pacers are hoping Young, out of football last year after being cut by Buffalo, can pick up the offense quickly enough to make a serious run at the backup job behind Aaron Rodgers.
JETS: Mark Sanchez is getting the first chance to start.
Locked in a tightly contested quarterback competition with rookie Geno Smith, Sanchez got the nod on Tuesday to be under center for the New York Jets in their preseason opener Friday night at Detroit.
