Arizona Cardinals interested in former Philadelphia coach Andy Reid

Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid has emerged as the leading candidate to become the Arizona Cardinals’ next head coach and could be named to the job by the end of the week, according to ESPN.com.

Reid’s status as the favorite for the Cardinals’ job was earlier reported by KTVK-TV in Phoenix on Tuesday.

Arizona is fast tracking Reid so it can move as quickly as possible.

Arizona plans to interview its defensive coordinator Ray Horton for the head coaching job today, according to a source. Based on how that interview goes, Reid could be named Cardinals’ coach at any point thereafter.

Reid has spent recent days assembling a coaching staff, telling potential assistants that an announcement could come quickly, according to one assistant.

EAGLES: The team has already have lined up interviews with three assistant coaches on the Atlanta Falcons in their search for a new coach.

The three assistants who will interview are defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and special teams coach Keith Armstrong.

49ERS: A person with knowledge of the deal says the team has signed kicker Billy Cundiff to compete with struggling veteran David Akers.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because there had been no formal announcement. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday the NFC West champion Niners (11-4-1), off this week as the NFC’s No. 2 seed, planned to try out kickers.

Cundiff was released by Washington on Oct. 9 after missing 5 of his 12 field goal attempts.

BEARS: Chicago had too many playoff misses and too many problems on offense. That’s why general manager Phil Emery fired coach Lovie Smith.

“Our No. 1 goal has to be to win championships and to win championships we must be in contention on a consistent basis,” Emery said.

BILLS: CEO Russ Brandon added the title of team president, and said Buddy Nix will remain the club’s general manager.

Also, according to a tweet by ESPN, Augusta native Ken Whisenhunt was meeting with the team about their vacant head coaching position.
