Rams to hire Jeff Fisher as coach

Almost two weeks after they put away the helmets and shoulder pads, the St. Louis Rams picked up their third win of a dismal season.

The Rams prevailed in a high stakes head-to-head competition with the Miami Dolphins and landed Jeff Fisher for their vacant head coaching job.

The team said Friday it was finalizing a deal to hire the veteran coach who sat out the 2011 season after 17 years in Tennessee.

Fisher is considered the top prize in the coaching-search sweepstakes.

FALCONS: The franchise added a new limited partner, though Arthur Blank continues to hold more than 90 percent ownership of the team.

Brian J. Barker is owner of AFS, a domestic freight forwarding company headquartered in Shreveport, La. He says he couldn’t pass up the chance to become involved with the NFL.

Barker joins a group of limited partners who invested in the Falcons between 2002 and 2010 under Blank’s ownership, including former NFL running back Warrick Dunn.

TEXANS: Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has withdrawn from consideration for the Tampa Bay head coaching position.

JETS: Coach Rex Ryan insists Mark Sanchez has the support of the organization, and the embattled quarterback shouldn’t feel uncomfortable when he returns to the locker room.

“I’ll say this, I don’t know how many don’t feel confident in Mark Sanchez,” Ryan said. “I’ll tell you this, if it’s not all of them, it’s the majority that have a great deal of confidence in Mark Sanchez. And when he walks through that door, his head is going to be held high. There’s no question about it. That’s what I know.”

The season ended on a sour note for Sanchez and the Jets, who failed to make the playoffs for the first time in Ryan’s three years as coach.

JAGUARS: Jacksonville hired Falcons quarterbacks coach Bob Bratkowski as offensive coordinator and retained defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.

Bratkowski spent last year working with Mike Mularkey, the Jaguars’ new coach, in Atlanta.
