While the case has yet to be settled, the 22 year-old driver not only apologized when he got to the Martinsville (Va.) Speedway for today’s Kroger 250 for the Camping World Truck Series, but he said he’s being evaluated for a possible drinking problem.
He also was cited for under-age drinking in Las Vegas in 2010.
“I know that it looks terrible having had that previous citation, but there’s a lot of things that have been implemented into this year through NASCAR, through my team that were going to continue to evaluate me and evaluate where I am,” Townley said.
SPRINT CUP PRACTICE: Jeff Gordon, who has seven career wins at Martinsville, had the fastest lap in practice Friday at 97.028 mph. Kurt Busch was second at 95.937.
The rest of the top 10 were: Brad Keselowski, Ryan Newman, David Stremme, Landon Cassill, Josh Wise, Juan Pablo Montoya, Scott Riggs and Aric Almirola.
ROAD RACES ADDED: Michael Waltrip says he’s added two road course races to Brian Vickers’ schedule this season.
Vickers, who was already signed to run six races for Michael Waltrip Racing, will add the races at Sonoma, Calif., and Watkins Glen, N.Y., to his schedule. Vickers is running both races at Bristol, Martinsville and New Hampshire for Waltrip.
The veteran made a strong return to the Sprint Cup Series last week at Bristol Motor Speedway in Waltrip’s No. 55 Toyota. He led three times for 125 laps and finished fifth as the team placed three drivers in the top five.
Mark Martin will drive the No. 55 in 24 races.
Waltrip says he gave the road courses to Vickers because “Mark said he didn’t want to run ‘em.”
CONCERT POSTPONED: Officials with the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation say actor Gary Sinise has postponed a benefit concert by his Lt. Dan Band in Martinsville, Va., after being involved in a minor car accident as a passenger.
Sinise was scheduled to perform in the concert at Martinsville High tonight. The concert will be held at a date to be determined, the organizers said.
John Hodge, spokesman for the foundation, says Sinise was not seriously injured in the accident.
