In Columbus, Ga., it took the Columbus Cottonmouths one period to get started, but they picked up the pace and beat the Augusta RiverHawks 4-1 on Tuesday night behind Mark Thorburn.
After a scoreless first period, Columbus got goals from Matt Gingera and Thorburn in the second period. Shawn Skelly had an Augusta goal in the period.
Columbus scored less than a minute into the third period to build a 3-1 lead on Alex MacLeod’s goal. Six minutes later, Thorburn scored again to make it 4-1. Both third-period goals came off power plays.
Austin Lee took the loss in goal, stopping 24 of 28 shots.
Columbus improved to 15-11-3 in the SPHL. Augusta dropped to 9-19-3.
