Arena staff takes care of ice problem

  • Follow RiverHawks

An ice problem at James Brown Arena that delayed a hockey scrimmage and forced the Augusta RiverHawks to move their training camp has been fixed, arena general manager Monty Jones Jr. said Wednesday afternoon.

"We've got it completely fixed," he said. "They should be able to get back onto the ice on Friday before they leave (for a road exhibition game)."

Jones said the source of the problem was the same one that delayed an Augusta Lynx game almost three years ago, when a cracked pipe melted a large chunk of ice in one corner of the rink along the boards.

A hole about a foot and a half wide halted play at the RiverHawks' training camp scrimmage Tuesday. Arena staff immediately responded to the problem, and a temporary fix allowed the team to complete its game.

Jones said after arena staff found the source of the problem and fixed it Wednesday morning, a full pressure test was conducted to look for any other potential weaknesses in the ice and none were found.

The RiverHawks moved their on-ice workout to Augusta Ice Sports Center on Wednesday morning. General manager Gilles Richard said the team will remain at the secondary ice venue for this morning's practice but will return to James Brown Arena for a Friday morning skate before the team leaves for that night's exhibition game in Fayetteville, N.C.

James Brown Arena will play host to the RiverHawks' first home exhibition at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Southern Professional Hockey League expansion team will open its inaugural season Oct. 21 on the road. The home opener is set for Oct. 22.
