Toronto Maple Leafs  vs. Calgary Flames
Tuesday Nov 11, 2008
 (Toronto 3-Calgary 4)

*Boyd, Iginla help Flames top Maple Leafs*

CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Dustin Boyd recorded his first multi-goal game of his career by tallying twice on Tuesday as the Calgary Flames posted a 4-3 triumph over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Defenseman Dion Phaneuf had a goal and two assists and captain Jarome Iginla scored a goal and set up another for Calgary, which improved to 2-4-0 in its last six games.

Blue-liner Mark Giordano notched two assists and Miikka Kiprusoff finished with 29 saves for the Flames.

"The difference was we played a full 60 minutes," Phaneuf said. "We knew we were playing a very good team that works extremely hard - with good goaltending. It was a big effort from our team and a big win for our hockey club."

"We just want to get better," Calgary coach Mike Keenan said. "We had a little bit of a dip. We had a lot more energy tonight and a lot more sustained play, shift after shift, period after period."

Matt Stajan recorded a goal and an assist and Alexei Ponikarovsky and Nik Antropov also tallied for the Maple Leafs. Vesa Toskala turned aside 28 shots for Toronto, which fell to 1-3-1 in its last five.

"It's awfully tough when your defensemen are backing into you or screening you, not blocking the shots or controlling the shots," Toronto coach Ron Wilson said. "We were just slow in our zone responding to loose pucks or always arriving second to it. You're not going to win many games when you get beat to loose pucks."

After Ponikarovsky opened the scoring 9:20 into the first period, Boyd leveled the contests exactly two minutes later by accepting a feed from Todd Bertuzzi and beating Toskala for his fifth goal and second in as many games.

"I think it's just a matter of time. Confidence-wise, I think it's a matter of getting minutes," Boyd said.

"He's playing great and skating well, and quick shots," Iginla said of Boyd. "He's always been a producer at every level, and you can just see his confidence coming and coming."

Iginla continued his torrid play against the Maple Leafs by scoring just 86 seconds later after cleaning up a rebound to give the Flames a 2-1 lead.

The 31-year-old Iginla then set up Phaneuf with 28 seconds remaining in the second period to give Calgary a two-goal bulge. The tally was Phaneuf's first since he had a goal and an assist in a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins on October 30.

For his part, Iginla has eight goals and eight assists in 17 career home games against the Maple Leafs.

Boyd gave the Flames a three-goal advantage with 8:47 remaining in the third period, notching his fifth goal in his last eight games. He had seven goals in 48 games last season.

"They outplayed us in the second period," Stajan said. "That fourth goal kind of killed us, but Vesa gave us a chance to get back in it. We've got to play a full 60 minutes in this league to win hockey games and we didn't do that tonight. There's no excuses. We've just got to play better."

Antropov countered with just over five minutes to play, and Stajan scored off a direct shot off a faceoff that handcuffed Kiprusoff with 54 seconds remaining.
