Staal brothers lead Hurricanes past Maple Leafs

TORONTO — Jordan Staal scored his first goal with the Hurricanes, and his brother Eric added the winner in Carolina’s 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.

Jeff Skinner had three assists, Patrick Dwyer added a goal and an assist, and Justin Faulk also scored for Carolina. Cam Ward backed up the offense with a 41-save performance.

Matt Frattin scored the only goal for the Maple Leafs. James Reimer made 35 saves.

TRADE: The New York Rangers shipped rugged forward Mike Rupp to the Minnesota Wild for forwards Darroll Powe and Nick Palmieri.

The Rangers have been looking for depth at forward to complement their top line of Rick Nash, Brad Richards and former Wild star Marian Gaborik.

New York is also dealing with the loss of captain Ryan Callahan, who is currently sidelined by a dislocated shoulder.

RED WINGS: Put rookie Brendan Smith on injured reserve Monday and he will be out two to four weeks with a sprained right shoulder.

Detroit recently got banged-up defensemen Jonathan Ericsson and Jakub KIndl on the ice and has been without defensemen Ian White and Carlo Colaiacovo because of injuries.

STARS: Activated center Derek Roy and goalie Cris Nilstorp from the injured list.

Both players are coming off groin injuries. Roy missed five games and Nilstrop sat out four.
