Winger lifts New Jersey past Toronto

TORONTO — David Clarkson scored twice, including the winning goal 2:40 into overtime to lift New Jersey to a 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Ilya Kovalchuk also scored for the Devils, who got 31 saves from Martin Brodeur.

Phil Kessel netted his 17th goal for Toronto, and Matt Frattin also scored for the Leafs.

ISLANDERS 5, LIGHTNING 1

In Uniondale, N.Y., Matt Martin scored his second game-winning goal in his three-year NHL career, as New York shook off a slow start to rout Tampa Bay.

The Islanders are 4-1-2 in their past seven games.

BLUES 3, RED WINGS 2

In St. Louis, David Backes scored St. Louis’ second consecutive power-play goal, and the Blues broke out of a 2 for 39 slump with the man advantage in a victory.

The Blues are 9-2-3 since coach Ken Hitchcock replaced the fired Davis Payne.

BLUE JACKETS 3, CANADIENS 2, SO

In Montreal, Rick Nash’s shootout goal lifted Colum­bus.

Curtis Sanford was perfect in the tiebreaker, turning aside David Desharnais, Max Pacioretty and Brian Gionta.
