The Augusta area is close to a clean sweep of the top spots in the first three classifications.

While Aquinas and Washington County remained No. 1 in the Class A and AAA Georgia Sports Writers Association high school football polls, Washington-Wilkes jumped three positions to second in Class AA. The Tigers, who beat rival Lincoln County 36-10 in Lincolnton on Friday, benefited from losses by Lovett and Heard County. Both teams were ranked ahead of Washington-Wilkes, with Lovett previously No. 1.

In Class AAAA, Burke County won at Jefferson County 20-7 and went from eighth to No. 5. The Bears have a big game this week in the Bear Den against No. 3 Griffin, the defending state champions.

Class AAA Laney also has a rankings-relevant game this week. The Wildcats, who are receiving votes, play at home against No. 9 Westminster (Atlanta). Westminster has beaten Laney in each of the past two years and just defeated Lovett this past Friday.
