The high school football season begins Friday night, and a matchup between two of the area’s top teams will be The Augusta Chronicle’s Game of the Week.

Lakeside travels across the Savannah River to take on North Augusta at 7:30 p.m. in an enticing Georgia vs. South Carolina prep game.

Stop by to see sports writer David Lee and Spotted! photographer Ryan Wehmeyer at The Augusta Chronicle booth for a chance to win a $25 Visa gift card. Our team will be there promoting our new Augusta High School Football App, featuring team pages, latest scores, video and photos.

The game will feature some of the area’s top talent.

While quarterback Trib Reece has been a touchdown machine at North Augusta, defensive back Rashad Roundtree has been a tackling menace and a big-time hitter for Lakeside.

Both are seniors with impressive statistics. The question remains: How often will North Augusta and its impressive quarterback challenge Roundtree’s side of the field?

The answer comes Friday, when the Panthers visit the Yellow Jackets. Reece, who passed for more than 3,000 yards as a junior, should test Roundtree on some throws. Roundtree is rated as high as a five-star prospect.

But the game is more than just a star showdown. Lakeside and North Augusta have new head coaches this season, with the Panthers bringing in Westside’s Steve Hibbitts (a former North Augusta defensive coordinator), and the Yellow Jackets going with Brian Thomas, who was previously at Northern Guilford (N.C.).

The two teams most recently met in 2011, when the Yellow Jackets won 38-22, backed by Devin Grimes’ two interceptions.
