Fox Creek linebacker Cory Lucas said his team felt "cheated" out of a playoff spot last year because of the SCHSL points system. He said the team is motivated by the snub.

Despite going 6-4 with a 3-3 region record in 2013, the Predators missed the playoffs because of the SCHSL points system. A fourth-place finish in a tough region helped ultimately doom Fox Creek as a team with a losing record picked up the last spot.

Fox Creek is using the snub to give itself an edge for the upcoming season.

“Our team feels like we were cheated out of it,” Predators linebacker Cory Lucas said. “That gave everyone a good motivation.”

Lucas will be the team’s leader on defense.

Offensively, Fox Creek lost versatile quarterback Deondre Baskett.

Sophomore Caleb Charltonlooks set to take over behind center.

Head coach Russ Schneider has a staff loaded with coaching experience.

Offensive coordinator Mickey Derrick was Greenbrier’s head coach from 1999-2005. Defensive coordinator Richard Brady was a previously head coach at Crescent, among other places, and assistant Jim Turner worked at Richmond Academy from 1998-2001.

Schneider is also happy with the group of players as the Predators try for another winning season.

“It used to be, we lose (a star player) and it’s just, may as well play with 10 at times,” Schneider said about past concerns about depth. “But this is a hard-working group. This is the most coachable group of kids.”

Of course, after the disappointing conclusion to the season a year ago, picking up a winning season wouldn’t be enough.

This fall, Fox Creek is thinking state playoffs.

Schneider knows one way the Predators could avoid any point problem.

“We win our region, we make the playoffs,” he said.
