Aquinas’ soccer trio signs to play collegiately

Three Aquinas teammates have been playing side by side for most of their lives.

The three fittingly sat at the same table Friday for one of the biggest days of their soccer careers.

The Irish’s Erin Rush signed to play at Charleston Southern, Riley Washington inked with Agnes Scott and Mary Kate Williamson is set to join Reinhardt.

“I’ve played with Erin and Mary Kate since we were in about third grade,” Washington said. “We’ve always grown up together, played together, and it’s amazing to be able to sign with them.”

The trio has been a force for the Aquinas girls program for several seasons. The Irish have consistently advanced past the first round of the Class A playoffs while contending within the region on an annual basis.

They have also contributed to the Augusta Arsenal club for multiple years.

“It’s really awesome, especially when we were younger and playing soccer on the same teams,” Williamson said. “This was our goal from the start to be able to sign with each other.”

Rush will play for Charleston Southern in the Division I Big South Conference. She said the desire to go to school in Charleston was a major factor in her decision to play for the Buccaneers.

“I’ve been dreaming about this day a lot, a while,” said Rush, who plans to study kinesiology. “I’ve always dreamed of going to school in Charleston and the coach, the people there, it was just really good. There was a connection.”

Rush echoed the sentiments of her teammates that playing for the Arsenal club has helped develop her game to the point of making a college signing possible.

“We were all very good, so we’d all push each other a lot harder,” she said. “A lot of my club teammates are going to the college level, so we all push each other.”
