Augusta Christian sweeps Alleluia

The matchup of two of the area’s top scorers in boys basketball never materialized Tuesday night.

While Augusta Christian’s Nate Dunlop sat out because of a knee issue, his teammates picked up the slack. Carrington Perry, Jackson Todd and Chris Troxel combined for 38 points as the Lions defeated Alleluia, 60-48.

Earlier, the Augusta Christian girls defeated Alleluia, 57-8.

The Augusta Christian boys (12-12) played without their leading scorer, junior guard Dunlop (26.2 scoring average), who missed the previous contest because of his knee. Lions coach Charles Welch said an MRI this morning will determine the extent of Dunlop’s injury.

“His health is first. That’s number one,” Welch said.

With Dunlop out, Alleluia’s Ben Freed was the featured player after reaching the 1,000-point career milestone one night earlier. The 6-foot-3 junior guard, coming off a 71-point performance earlier this month against Rock Springs, started out hot against Augusta Christian. Freed swished two 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Angels built an early 14-2 advantage.

Freed scored 11 points in the opening quarter, but Augusta Christian clamped down on him and his teammates from there. With Perry and Todd blanketing him, Freed managed just three points during the second and third quarters, when the Lions began to pull away. Freed finished with 26 points.

“Like probably everybody else, we started out in a matchup zone against him,” Welch said. “We quickly went to a matchup zone. My hats off to Carrington Perry and Jackson Todd who really tried to wear him down.”

In the girls contest, Jakeria Bonner scored 12 of her game-high in the first half as Augusta Christian pulled away early. The Lady Lions went into intermission up 31-7.

Nine players scored for Augusta Christian, including Michelle Gibson, Liza Spratling and Alexis Perrell, who each scored seven points. Michaela Milligan led Alleluia with six points.
