Harlem wins opener in Elite Eight; Evans, Greenbrier fall

In Columbus, Ga., Harlem opened the Class AA Elite Eight Tournament in exciting fashion.

 

The defending state champs picked up a 3-2 win when Skyler Wiggins hit an RBI single in the ninth inning of the Lady Bulldogs’ victory over Banks County on Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs (24-6) advanced to play Monticello at 9 p.m. Thursday. The winner of that contest moved on to play again at 6 tonight.

The championship contest will be held at noon Saturday.

In Class AAAAA action, Evans (27-3) took a hard-luck loss in the opener, getting no-hit in a 1-0 loss to Pope. The Lady Knights fell into the losers bracket and will play again at 10 a.m. Friday against Effingham County.

Greenbrier (26-10) dropped its opener to Cambridge, 6-2. The Lady Wolfpack fell into the losers bracket and will face Houston County at 10 a.m.

Evans and Greenbrier will now have to win four games in a row to advance to the Class AAAAAA championship at noon Saturday.
