Five prep football games to watch

LAKESIDE AT GREENBRIER

RECORDS: Lakeside 0-5, Greenbrier 5-0

KEY PLAYERS: Lakeside-Sr. WR Graham Tulowitzky, Sr. DL Carlos Carter, Jr. QB Will Childers. Greenbrier-Sr. OL Eric Chatman, Jr. RB J.Q. Brown, Sr. DE Tarael Hooks

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Greenbrier is looking to turn the corner here. The Wolfpack are off to a 5-0 start for the second consecutive season, but they lost four region games in a row last year to miss the playoffs, starting with a 7-0 loss to Lakeside. A win here would be a big boost toward a potential playoff berth. The same goes for Lakeside, which has lost its first five for the second year in a row. The Panthers reeled off three consecutive region wins last season to make the playoffs. Expect another low-scoring, hard-fought game.

HEPHZIBAH AT THOMSON

RECORDS: Hephzibah 4-2, 1-0 Region 3-AAAA, Thomson 4-0

KEY PLAYERS: Hephzibah-Jr. RB Rayquan Riley, Jr. DE Elijah Mayes, Sr. QB Max Lockwood. Thomson-Sr. LB Artest Banks, Sr. QB Mills Ridings, Sr. ATH Christian Tutt

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Hephzibah is off to its best start since making the playoffs in 2014, but the region continues to run through Thomson and Burke County until a challenger steps forward. After a three-week break, No. 2 Thomson showed no rust last week in a 69-0 rout of Clarkston, and the Bulldogs will be a significant challenge for an upstart Hephzibah team that’s won four in a row. Thomson has won 18 consecutive games against the Rebels.

AUGUSTA PREP AT WESTMINSTER

RECORDS: Augusta Prep 5-1, 0-1 GISA Region 4-AAA, Westminster 3-4, 0-2

KEY PLAYERS: Augusta Prep-Sr. RB/DB B.J. Stone, Sr. OL/DL Hinson Fowler, Sr. ATH Palmer Bachelder. Westminster-Jr. QB Collin Landrum, Sr. ATH Larkin Ison, Sr. WR/DB Brandon Shiley

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: After a tough loss to fellow state contender Gatewood to open region play, Augusta Prep is looking to get the region slate back on track against rival Westminster. The Cavaliers took care of the Wildcats 35-14 last season and are again flying high with athletes all over the field. Westminster has shown some bright spots this year but will again have its hands full against Augusta Prep.

HARLEM AT JEFFERSON COUNTY

RECORDS: Harlem 4-2, 2-1 Region 4-AA, Jefferson County 6-0, 3-0

KEY PLAYERS: Harlem-Sr. OL Waylin Bell, Jr. RB A.J. Brown, Sr. LB Brendan Maddox. Jefferson County-Sr. K Evans Hodges, Sr. QB C.J. Hales, Sr. WR Ty King

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: After getting off to a 2-0 start in region play, Harlem is in the midst of a tough two-game stretch against region frontrunners Screven County and Jefferson County. The Bulldogs fell to the third-ranked Gamecocks 35-0 last week and now travel to the eighth-ranked Warriors, who have scored more than 40 points in each of their past four games, including twice in the 60s. Jefferson County has won seven in a row against Harlem dating back to 2002.

HERITAGE AT GROVETOWN

RECORDS: Heritage 3-2, Grovetown 3-3, 1-0 Region 3-AAAAAA

KEY PLAYERS: Heritage-Sr. QB Caleb Pruitt, Sr. WR Jordan Young, Sr. DL Kurott Garland. Grovetown-Sr. RB D’Angelo Durham, Sr. FB/LB Greggory Rodgers, Sr. FB/LB Shamar Cofield

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Heritage pulled out the Region 3-AAAAAA title last season, but it’s again up for grabs, and Grovetown is trying to get its hands on it. The Warriors started region play on a positive note with a win over Alcovy last week, and a victory over Heritage would go a long way toward contending for the region and earning a playoff berth. Grovetown will need to slow down Heritage’s passing attack enough to give its offense a chance.
