Lakeside comes up short against Bradwell Institute

In position for its first win of the season, Lakeside watched a disaster unfold in the second half Friday night.

Bradwell Institute scored 20 unanswered points in the third quarter to flip the script in a 27-21 win over the Panthers.

Lakeside (0-5) entered the game having scored three points against a difficult gamut of opponents that included North Augusta, Richmond Hill and top-10 teams in Burke County and Jefferson County. The Panthers, who lost to Bradwell Institute, 31-7, last year, led by two touchdowns early in the second half.

Lakeside’s Will Childers went 12 for 17 passing for 198 yards with two touchdowns. Isiah Boyd led the Panthers’ rushing attack with 15 carries for 75 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown.

Bradwell Institute improved to 6-0 thanks to a rushing attack led by Kevin Harris, who couldn’t be stopped down the stretch. Harris rushed for 228 yards on 38 carries with a pair of scores.

Harris put the Tigers on the board first with his 17-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He finished the first half with 91 rushing yards.

Lakeside scored its first touchdown of the season in the second quarter. On third and 4 from the 15, Jamal Benjamin took a pass over the middle from Will Childers. Benjamin sprinted left, juked several defenders and scampered into the end zone to tie the game.

Late in the half, Lakeside converted a third down play with 37 seconds remaining. On first down from the Panthers 20, Childers stepped up in the pocket and found Graham Tulowitzky open 20 yards downfield. Tulowitzky turned and outraced the Tigers secondary for an 80-yard touchdown.

Lakeside went into intermission up 14-7.

The Panthers continued their momentum into the second half. On third and 15, Childers found Devin Golatt on a 40-yard pass play. One play later, Boyd broke free from the 30. Lakeside led 21-7 with 10:25 left in the third.

Bradwell Institute bounced back on its next drive, chewing up large chunks of yardage on the ground. Harris capped a nine-play, 79-yard drive with his 7-yard run.

On Lakeside’s next possession, Andrew Rafferty scooped up a fumble and scored from 15 yards out to tie the game. On the Panthers’ next drive, the Tigers flushed Childers out of the pocket. He threw high on the run over the middle, Jaliel Nieves picking off the pass. Nieves scampered 55 yards down the left sideline for the touchdown. Bradwell Insitute missed the extra point, but it led by six with 4:50 to go in the third.

Lakeside had its chances to go ahead. The Panthers started a fourth-quarter drive on the Tigers 10 after Zack Pye’s second blocked punt of the evening. But on second goal from the 9, Childers recovered a fumble 10 yards behind him. After Childers threw an incompletion in the end zone, Abib Diouf’s 36-yard field-goal attempt came up short.

On their next possession, the Panthers marched down to the Bradwell Institute 23. But on fourth and 1, Childers took a shotgun snap and was stopped short on his run up the middle with 5:49 remaining. From there, Harris and his Tigers’ teammates ran out the clock.
