Five prep games to watch

RECORDS: Richmond Academy 3-0, Greenbrier 3-0

KEY PLAYERS: Richmond Academy-Sr. RB Malik Knowles, Jr. QB Mason Cobb, Sr. LB Terry Bland. Greenbrier-Sr. OL Eric Chatman, Jr. RB J.Q. Brown, Sr. DE Tarael Hooks

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: These two teams appear to be on the rise. Greenbrier is thriving on defense while relying on the talented legs of Brown. Richmond Academy has one of the emerging stars of the area in Knowles. A win here for either team would go a long way toward building further confidence for region play.

RECORDS: Mount de Sales 2-1, Aquinas 1-1

KEY PLAYERS: Mount de Sales-Soph. QB Dexter Williams, Soph. RB Josiah Cotton, Sr. RB/DB Adrian Hardwick. Aquinas-Sr. WR/DB George Welch, Sr. RB/LB Joseph Douglas, Sr. WR/DE Bradley White

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Aquinas will have to shake off the rust of not playing the past two weeks because of an open date and cancellation. The Irish showed a lot of promise the first two games and will look to keep that going against a young Mount de Sales team. The Cavaliers haven’t posted a winning record since 2011 and have lost three in a row to Aquinas.

RECORDS: Evans 2-1, Washington County 0-3

KEY PLAYERS: Evans-Sr. RB Corey Watkins, Sr. DE Coby Germany, Jr. QB Damekus Taylor. Washington County-Jr. RB/LB Preston Daniels, Sr. OL Mitch Lord, Jr. QB Jake Helton

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: These two renewed a series last year that went dormant for 40 years, and Washington County pulled out a one-point thriller on the road. Evans travels this time, and the Knights are bringing a wealth of athletes to challenge a Golden Hawks team that’s more talented than the record indicates.

RECORDS: Thomas Jefferson 0-5, Augusta Prep 3-0

KEY PLAYERS: Thomas Jefferson-Sr. QB Zack Douglas, Sr. RB Dawson Gardner, Sr. RB Warthen Evans. Augusta Prep-Sr. RB/DB B.J. Stone, Sr. OL/DL Hinson Fowler, Sr. WR/DB/K Palmer Bachelder

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Augusta Prep pounded its first three opponents, scoring in the 50s twice and reaching 46 in its most recent game. The Cavaliers will look to keep that string of dominance going against a Thomas Jefferson team that’s adjusting to a new style of play under a first-year head coach. The two teams picked up the series last year with Augusta Prep winning 39-7.

RECORDS: Benedictine 3-0, Swainsboro 3-0

KEY PLAYERS: Benedictine-Sr. RB Travis Blackshear, Sr. QB Nick Iannone, Jr. DL Eric Hicks Jr. Swainsboro-Sr. RB Jalyn Williams, Jr. QB Jacolby Gibbons, Jr. LB Keenan Williams

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: This matchup is considered one of the best in the state this week. Benedictine is No. 1 in Class AA, won a state championship last season, and hasn’t lost a game since the 2015 quarterfinals. Swainsboro has been perhaps the surprise of Class AA and is on the verge of a state ranking. The Tigers have received eye-popping production from Williams and will need more of the same if they want to pull off the upset.
