FIVE PREP GAMES TO WATCH

JEFFERSON AT THOMSON

RECORDS: Jefferson 2-0, Thomson 2-0

KEY PLAYERS: Jefferson–Sr. RB Colby Wood, Sr. QB Bryce Moore, Sr. DE Noah Mulvey. Thomson–Sr. ATH Christian Tutt, Sr. LB Artest Banks, Sr. QB Mills Ridings

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: No. 2 Thomson is looking to make it three wins in two seasons against No. 4 Jefferson after beating the Dragons twice last year, including in the state semifinals. This will be a physical test for both teams. The Bulldogs feature a strong stable of running backs and a talented defense, while Jefferson has one of the top rushers in Georgia. The state will be watching this one.

WASHINGTON COUNTY AT BURKE COUNTY

RECORDS: Washington County 0-1, Burke County 2-0

KEY PLAYERS: Washington County–Jr. RB/LB Preston Daniels, Sr. OL Mitch Lord, Jr. QB/TE Jake Helton. Burke County–Sr. OL Austin Milner, Sr. LB Tyreke Washington, Sr. ATH Damari Kelly

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: These two proud programs have high hopes for this season, especially the Bears, who are a senior-laden squad with considerable talent on both sides of the ball. Their power spread offense has steamrolled the first two opponents at 41 and 42 points. The Golden Hawks have lost four of their past five to Burke County, but the score has been close in three of those losses.

LINCOLN COUNTY AT GROVETOWN

RECORDS: Lincoln County 1-0, Grovetown 0-2

KEY PLAYERS: Lincoln County–Sr. QB/DB Javon Reid, Sr. WR/DB Duke Roberts, Sr. LB Antonio Williams. Grovetown–Sr. RB/WR/DB D’Angelo Durham, Sr. QB Taylor Youngblood, Sr. FB/LB Greggory Rodgers

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: These two teams hang their hats on defense, so it’s no surprise they combined for 21 points in a Red Devil win last season. Make no mistake they both have talent on offense, however, with Reid leading Lincoln County and Durham leading Grovetown. Look for another tight battle that could come down to a few plays.

SILVER BLUFF AT FOX CREEK

RECORDS: Silver Bluff 0-2, Fox Creek 1-1

KEY PLAYERS: Silver Bluff–Sr. QB/LB Cedrick Trottie, Sr. RB/LB Raekwon Mann, Jr. QB/DB Jamaal Washington. Fox Creek–Sr. OL Dalton Barnes, Sr. DL Jaylen Davis, Jr. QB Cam Mitchem

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Both teams could use a win here to get on track early in the season. The Bulldogs are coming off a tough loss to Williston-Elko and the schedule doesn’t get easier, while the Predators were shocked by Cross Creek a week ago. This is a matchup of two different types of playbooks and anything could happen.

AIKEN AT RICHMOND ACADEMY

RECORDS: Aiken 0-2, Richmond Academy 1-0

KEY PLAYERS: Aiken–Sr. OL/DL Eric Stroman, Sr. DL Omar Simmons, Jr. WR/DB Stavon Porter. Richmond Academy–Jr. QB Mason Cobb, Sr. LB Terry Bland, Sr. DL Justin Thomas

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The Hornets have lost their first two against tough opponents, while the Musketeers got off to a positive start with a rout of Westside. These two were forced to cancel last year’s game because of inclement weather. It’s a matchup that hasn’t happened since 1975 and dates back to 1951, with Richmond Academy holding the all-time mark at 13-1. A victory here would give the Musketeers another solid start to their season, while Aiken is looking to get on track.
