Polewski stepping down as South Aiken head coach

Bob Polewski is stepping down as head baseball coach at South Aiken.

The veteran coach, who has guided several area baseball programs for 25 years, will remain athletic director at South Aiken after a 12-year stint leading the Thoroughbreds.

Polewski also coached at Silver Bluff, Wagener-Salley and Cross Creek before his tenure at South Aiken.

Under Polewski’s guidance, the Thoroughbreds were a consistent playoff team and advanced past the district bracket five times. They appeared in the 2010 Class AAA state championship and took Lugoff-Elgin to a deciding Game 3.

South Aiken has produced professional players and many college products under Polewski.

Left-hander Andrew Faulkner was taken in the 14th round in 2011 by the Texas Rangers and is currently in the Baltimore Orioles system. Taylor Widener and Caleb Smith are also in professional organizations after pitching at South Aiken and later in college.
