THOMSON – Will Roberts capped a successful season and career Tuesday with the stroke of a pen.
The standout Thomson lineman picked up several honors over his senior season, from All-Area to All-Region and a Border Bowl IV participant. He was surrounded by friends and family at the school for his latest accomplishment as he signed to play at Presbyterian College.
Roberts was described by coach Rob Ridings during the 2016 season as Thomson’s “Ironman.” He was a rare two-way player for the Bulldogs who was named All Region 3-AAAA as an H-Back/tight end while also standing out as a defensive end.
He helped guide Thomson as a captain to a 14-1 record and trip to the 2016 Class AAAA state championship game. Now, he’ll join Presbyterian, a Division I program in the Big South Conference.
“As a little kid you look forward to playing for state, and you look forward to playing in college, and that’s what’s happening,” Roberts said. “It’s all coming together, it’s all working out just fine, so it’s perfect.”
Ridings recalled a trip they took to Clinton, S.C. this past season to watch Presbyterian. Both left the game knowing it was the right place for Roberts.
“We went up for a game and I told Will, ‘There’s no doubt in my mind you can play here,’” Ridings said. “It took a little time to work things out, but once we got everything rolling, I think PC was the best fit. We’re very proud of him. He’s going to do a great job.”
Ridings added that academics played a big part in the decision. Roberts is currently undecided on a major but felt Presbyterian was the perfect fit on and off the field. He’ll join former Thomson linebacker Nick Moss on the roster, and South Aiken linebacker Colby Campbell also recently signed to play for the Blue Hose.
“I had several colleges reach out to me, and I went there and it just felt like home from the first time I went there,” Roberts said. “Every time I went, I just loved it. It felt like the place that felt most right.”
