After stranding 10 runners through six innings, the Evans Lady Knights plated the one final run they needed in the bottom of the seventh.
After seeing their 3-1 lead turn into a 3-all tie in the top of the inning against Greenbrier, the Lady Knights used a Jenna Cliatt leadoff single, two-base error and Stacey Vacekonis sacrifice fly to beat the Lady Wolfpack 4-3 on Thursday.
“It was a good game,” said Evans’ coach Colette Cassedy, whose Lady Knights (7-3) went to 2-0 in Region 2-AAAAA while the Lady Wolfpack (7-1) dropped to 1-1.
“You want to play them and you hope you come out on top. We saw some things we need to work on and they did some things well we didn’t know they could do well, so you kind of start picking up on little things.”
The Lady Knights left the bases loaded without scoring twice in the first five innings.
They finally came though in the bottom of the sixth inning as Samantha Davis’ bases-loaded walk gave them a 2-1 lead. One out later, Ashton Odom’s fielder’s choice plated Samantha Peka with the second run of the inning good for a 3-1 lead.
Kirsten McMonigle led off the seventh with a walk and Jordie Holt followed with a single to put the tying runs on base. One out later, Monica Mullis blasted a double to score the pair.
Evans pitcher Brooke Buck worked the first five innings before being relieved by Davis.
Buck returned to finish the game after the first two batters of the seventh inning and picked up the win. She allowed one run while scattering nine hits as the defense played perfect behind her turning two double plays in the process.
The Lady Wolfpack committed three errors, as two of the four runs allowed by Kirsten Titus were unearned.
“Evans was better than us today and the bottom line is we can’t kick it around in the infield like we did today,” Greenbrier coach Garrett Black said.
