About the only thing Kayla Hergott hadn’t achieved in her four years at Lakeside was to be named The Augusta Chronicle All-Area Girls Tennis Player of the Year.

Check.

Hergott receives the 2014 honor after a senior season with the Lady Panthers in which the No. 1 singles player went undefeated – mirroring a feat she accomplished her sophomore year – as the team advanced to the Class AAAAA quarterfinals, finishing with a 19-1 record.

“It’s definitely an honor to finally be player of the year,” Hergott said. “I’m excited.”

Her four-year record speaks for itself. As the No. 1 singles player since her freshman year, Hergott accumulated a 78-3 record, was a four-time all-region performer, never lost a match in the state tournament and led the Lady Panthers to the 2013 Class AAAAA state title.

While enjoying the personal accolades, Hergott said what she did out on the court was always about team.

“Everything I’ve learned from being on a team, every experience that we’ve gone through together, you can’t really describe it,” Hergott said.

“It was disappointing not to go as far (in 2014), but we still had a good season. The first match we lost unfortunately was our last. That’s still pretty good.”

Lakeside coach Donnie Burch said he would miss Hergott and what she brought to the team as a player, captain, individual and fierce competitor.

“It’s not just her skill, it’s people hear about you and they know what they’re about to face and you know you’re going to absolutely have to put a point away to beat her and that’s very seldom going to happen,” Burch said. “It’s nice to have that intimidation factor.”
