South Carolina State will strengthen its Augusta-area ties next season.
Three local girls basketball players have signed with the Lady Bulldogs: Cross Creek star Ashleigh Outler, North Augusta’s Mallory Stone and Westside’s Jahmia Bradley.
“I think it should be fun,” said Outler, who signed Wednesday. “With the freshmen they have coming in, we should be able to step their program up.”
Outler was been one of the area’s best scorers in recent years. She makes 3s, drives like a point guard and posts up like a center. She didn’t stop scoring until she had more than 1,600 points in her career – a program record.
After winning Region 3-AAAA Player of the Year as a junior, Outler averaged 21 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals per game her senior season as she carried the Lady Razorbacks to the Class AAAA state quarterfinals.
With Outler starring and picking up All-State honors, Cross Creek went a combined 52-5 the past two seasons, winning three state playoff games.
“It’s fun knowing we progressed,” Outler said. “We went up.”
South Carolina State’s team is already filled with local products.
Laney’s Mykala Jones and Silver Bluff’s Roxanna Cheek were both on this year’s roster.
Jones averaged 21.1 minutes per game while averaging 9.4 points. Cheek appeared in only one game as a freshman.
With those familiar names, Outler is ready to see how she does at the next level.
“It’s always my dream, to play Division I basketball, and then overseas,” she said. “I completed one dream; I’m just waiting for the next one.”
