Lakeside’s Daniel Cotty and Jonathan Edwards will get to square off against each other in practice at the collegiate level.
Best friends since sixth grade at Evans Middle School, Cotty, a linebacker, and Edwards, a wide receiver/running back, signed their letters of intent to play football for Division I Kennesaw State on Friday.
Cotty was a 2013 first team All-Region-2-AAAAA and all-county performer with 80 tackles. Edwards, a 2012 first team All-Region and all-county player made 2013 second team All-Region 2-AAAAA and was honorable mention all-county.
“It’s awesome,” said Cotty of the duo signing. “One, I get to go play football and I get to go with my best friend.”
Edwards echoed Cotty’s sentiments and said that staying together was important.
“It played a big role and since we both liked it (Kennesaw) we decided to go ahead and commit to that,” Edwards said.
Cotty wasn’t sure that playing football together was going to be in the cards.
“I didn’t have as much attention as he did, so I really didn’t see it happening until near the end when we got attention from Kennesaw State,” Cotty said.
The Owls’ football program isn’t playing yet, so both will have a chance to be on the field when the team travels to East Tennessee State on Sept. 3, 2015.
Cotty liked the campus and dorms and was sold when the coaches talked about the program.
“They made me feel like it could be something big in a couple of years and I wanted to be a part of it,” said Cotty. “Being Division I, that’s always a plus.”
