Turner said Wednesday that he is resigning after leading the Bulldogs to a 24-10 mark the past three seasons.

“It’s an opportunity to invest in my family and to spend time with them,” he said.

In his first two years, Turner went 21-3, making the first round of the 2011 state playoffs and then the state quarterfinals in 2012.

But with a young team in 2013, the Bulldogs struggled to a 3-7 finish. Thomson’s downslide included a fight with LaGrange in the Bulldogs’ first win of the season.

Turner expects to move close to Georgia Southern, where a son goes to school. A daughter who is currently a senior at Thomson will also be attending Georgia Southern, he said.

Before arriving in Thomson, Turner coached at Emanuel County Institute from 2005-2010. He led the program to the Class A state championship game in 2007 and 2008, winning it all in 2007.

Going 89-22 in nine years as a high school head coach, Turner said he couldn’t give his family and the Thomson athletic program the time it deserved. He was also the school’s athletic director.

After he got to Thomson, Turner didn’t lose before November in either of his first two seasons. In 2012, the Bulldogs were undefeated until the state quarterfinals.

Though Turner is stepping away from coaching for now, he said he’ll likely return to coaching in some capacity.

“I’m sure I will get the itch before too long,” he said.
