The Georgia High School Association has already taken action to counter this week’s potential weather problems, pushing back the start date of the state basketball playoffs by one day to Feb. 19. With the announcement, any regions forced to postpone a day of games could complete a region tournament Monday.

Even in that situation, teams would have at least one day between the end of the region tournament and the start of the state tournament.

Locally, Aquinas, Butler and Greenbrier will serve as hosts of region tournaments this week.

At Butler, the Region 3-AAAA tournaments is scheduled to end Friday. But if games are postponed, they could just be pushed back a day, meaning a Saturday conclusion, Richmond County Schools athletic director George Bailey said.

Over in Region 2-AAAAA, brackets have been set to finish Saturday. All but two games in the region will be at Greenbrier, as two boys games on Tuesday have been moved to Evans so games could be completed earlier in the day.
While Thursday was once scheduled to be an off day, weather concerns led to a switch. Wednesday's games, all girls contests, have been moved to Thursday.

Aquinas is scheduled to play host to the semifinals and finals of the Region 7-A tournaments Friday and Saturday.

The GHSA issued this statement on the weather:

“Due to the impending ice/snow storm moving into Georgia, the first round of the 2014 GHSA Basketball State Tournament will be held on Wednesday, February 19 (Girls) and Thursday, February 20 (Boys). The revision in the schedule will allow regions affected by the weather, to complete their region tournament on Monday, February 17. Additionally, regions will have the option to schedule teams (2) games in a single day, providing there is a 4-hour interval between the scheduling of the games.

“We encourage regions to attempt to finish their tournaments by Saturday, February 15, but not at the slightest risk of safety to participants or spectators. Make sure that you keep your game officials informed of any schedule changes you
