When Laney plays Josey, both sides of the stands are packed and the noise gets loud.
It’s a premier regular-season game. It’s when stars like the Wildcats’ JaShawn Brooks take over.
In the 91-62 win against the rival Eagles this past Saturday, Brooks scored 32 points to be named The Augusta Chronicle’s Player of the Week.
“It’s a wonderful atmosphere,” he said about the Laney-Josey series. “It’s something that will go down in the history books, so you want to make it memorable. You got to do what you got to do.”
At the start of the most recent game, Brooks worked from beyond the 3-point line, drilling three 3-pointers in the first half. In the second half, he drove to the hoop after he missed a couple long-range attempts. Even though not every shot was falling, Brooks was adding to his point total by staying aggressive.
On a team with more than a few scoring threats, Brooks still stands out.
“You always got to have somebody that can shoot the ball,” Wildcats coach Buck Harris said. “With his range, it helps us out – it opens up the floor. He’s definitely a weapon with his shooting ability. He’s also starting to attack the basketball more.”
