The Laney girls basketball player showed her dribbling ability and post moves in key spots as the Lady Wildcats surged in the second half for an 81-55 win Tuesday night at Josey. Wright scored a game-high 22 points.
“I feel like LeBron,” Wright said about playing in the up-tempo system. “He can move one through five, and so can I. That’s what I was working on all summer.”
Wright outscored the Lady Eagles by herself in the third quarter, 12-11, when Laney (16-1) turned a 36-29 halftime lead to a 62-40 advantage.
But Wright wasn’t doing it all alone. With tipped passes and turnovers, Laney was often running, though Josey was close in chasing. Still, Gemiya Bowman put up 18 points Destiny Brewton added 16 points as the edge grew.
Before that, the Lady Eagles were more than a nuisance. Though the Lady Wildcats’ constant pressure did start breaks, Josey was efficient when it did beat the press.
Breanna Wilson often benefitted by making close field goals, usually unguarded after her teammates got past the defense. She finished with 19 points as the game remained close until the third quarter.
That was when Wright and the Lady Wildcats pushed through.
“We needed to buckle up,” Wright said.
