Hustle, defense lift Glenn Hills

Glenn Hills 52, Richmond Academy 34

The unexpected layoff over, Glenn Hills brought the defense to get a victory.

After Tuesday’s scheduled game was postponed due to their gym’s heating issues to combat the cold, the Spartans came out strong from the start in a 52-34 Friday night win at Richmond Academy.

“One thing I like about my team is, we always play defense,” Glenn Hills coach Travis McRae said. “If the offense isn’t clicking, the defense will be there.”

Never trailing, Glenn Hills brought the hustle, winning races to the hoop for easy scores. Already up double figures halfway through, the Spartans reached even safer territory when Aaron Williamson’s transition field goal pushed it to 36-15 in the third quarter.

Williamson had a game-best 13 points, with Zaire Cook (11 points) and Aubrey McRae (10 points) adding offensive support.

But the story was defense. Sprinkling in steals with one-shot defensive possessions, Glenn Hills took a 28-15 lead at the half. While Richmond Academy did have close misses, especially in the first quarter, the Spartans beat the Musketeers down the floor for baskets.

Early on, Aubrey McRae did his part, scoring after an offensive rebound and then getting more Glenn Hills points through his hustle. Right after McRae’s make, Richmond Academy coughed up the ball with a McRae steal, and the senior then passed forward to Keon Major for a layup.

The Musketeers had only six goals in the first half as they fell behind. Though Moses Lewis hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as Richmond Academy got to within 12, Glenn Hills scored the last six points.

“We’re just playing good defense,” Williamson said. “We had been talking, that we were slacking off. So we all decided to just play team basketball and win the game.”
