As the state playoffs begin, four area teams have a rank as well as a seed.

Aquinas, Washington County and Washington-Wilkes all won their regions and placed in the top three of their Georgia Sports Writers Association class polls. Class AAAA playoff participant Burke County is the only ranked local team out of the top 3, but the Bears did jump two spots to sixth after beating Wayne County for the region title.

Except for Class A public and private, all Georgia High School Association playoffs begin this Friday.

In Class AAA poll, unbeaten Washington County was third again in advance of the postseason.

Down in Class AA, undefeated Washington-Wilkes moved up to No. 3. The Tigers were the only local team in the Class AA top 10, but Laney did get one vote.

Finally, Aquinas was No. 2 for the second week in a row. The Irish just completed an unbeaten regular season for the first time. But they won’t know their playoff seed or opponent until Wednesday afternoon, after the Class A power rating appeals are heard by the GHSA. Aquinas is currently tied for No. 4 in the power ratings but is the Region 7-A champion. That title means the Irish will get one of the top seeds, according to GHSA procedure:

- The region champions will be seeded at the top of the bracket ranked in order by their power ratings. For example if four of the eight region champions are public schools these four schools will have the top four seeds in the 16-team bracket.

- The remainder of the teams in the bracket will be filled with wildcard teams (teams that did not automatically qualify) using the highest power rating in descending order to fill the bracket.
