Playoff picture becomes clearer for area teams

Receiver Vicente Thompkins helped Laney win its region and earn a top seed in the Class AA state playoffs, which start Friday.

Four area teams have earned No. 1 seeds for the upcoming GHSA state playoffs.

Class AAAA Burke County, Class AAA Washington County and two teams from Class AA – Laney and Washington-Wilkes – all won their region titles this year, giving them a game with a No. 4. seed in the first round.

But they weren’t the only local programs to reach the postseason.

In Class AAAAA, Lakeside is the only area representative.

In Class AAA, Jefferson County grabbed Region 3-AAA’s second seed and Thomson took No. 3.

In Class AA, Westside earned a third seed, with Screven County getting a fourth.

The Class A brackets won’t be finalized until the power ratings are released. The Class A public and private state playoffs don’t begin until Nov. 22.
