The Musketeers listened.

Travis Beatty and Quentarious Ellis combined for four touchdowns as Richmond Academy rolled to a 49-6 win Friday night over Cross Creek.

“Coach said don’t get caught up in the hype,” senior lineman Willie Yarbary said. “We just came out and played.”

Richmond Academy started the season dropping four of its first six games, with defeats to the likes of Burke County, Evans and Statesboro. The Musketeers (5-4 overall, 4-1 Region 3-AAAA) rebounded to win three in a row and will now play host to Liberty County on Friday night in the region playoffs – the winner advances to the state playoffs.

“We’ve gotten better,” Hughes said. “We knew coming in our schedule was a little top-heavy. We’ve got a lot of key senior leaders, but we play a lot of young guys. We’ve got a lot of 10th- and 11th-graders and it’s their first time on varsity. We knew it was going to take them a little time to jell.”

It took little time for Richmond Academy to find its offensive chemistry against Cross Creek. After the Razorbacks fumbled on their opening drive, the Musketeers took advantage, with Beatty punching it in from the 11. On the Musketeers’ second drive, Beatty darted through the left side on a 10-yard run to stake Richmond Academy to a 14-0 lead.

The Musketeers scored on their first six drives and never punted. Beatty finished with 84 yards on 10 carries, while Zac Mitchell ran three times for 73 yards and a touchdown. Ellis came off the bench in the second half, rushing three times for 108 yards.

Cross Creek (2-7, 1-5) avoided a fifth shutout this season, with Tyler Darnall completing his final four passes. After the Razorbacks called a timeout with 0.6 seconds left, Darnall fired a 12-yard slant pass for a touchdown to Yusef Jenkins. Darnall went 16 for 31 passing for 192 yards.
