Aquinas football is closing in on No. 2.

The Irish are only five points away from tying for the second spot in Class A in the Georgia Sports Writers Association high school football poll.

Undefeated Aquinas was 11 points behind Landmark Christian in the previous week’s poll. But after Friday’s 43-14 rout against Wilkinson County, the Irish gained some ground.

In Class AAAA, Burke County returned to the rankings after a 48-22 win against Glenn Hills — the Bears’ fourth consecutive win. Burke County is tied for 10th with Wayne County, a team the Bears beat earlier this season.

In Class AAA, Washington County remained third while Jefferson County dropped out after it lost for the second week in a row.

Finally, Washington-Wilkes stayed No. 4 in Class AA. Since the start of the 2012 season, the Tigers have gone 18-2.
