Tolu Onigbanjo is planning to take a well-deserved nap Monday afternoon.

The Westside defensive lineman already has his plate full with three AP courses his senior year. But for one day, he will at least enjoy a brief break from football.

Onigbanjo and his teammates enter the bye week with momentum after notching a 23-6 region win over Screven County on Friday night.

“I’m going to sleep, rest, and then I’m going to get back to business,” Onigbanjo said. “I’m going to watch some film and take a nap.”

The Patriots, who snapped a five-game losing streak to the Gamecocks and defeated them for the first time since 1985, improved to 5-3 overall (2-2 Region 3-AA). Westside now gets a week off before jumping back into region play Nov. 1 at East Laurens.

“It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the program, and the kids this week just came together,” said Patriots coach Steve Hibbitts, whose team entered with three losses in four weeks. “Defense was just excellent.”

Onigbanjo and his fellow defenders helped contain Screven County’s offense, limiting the Gamecocks to 180 yards of total offense – 53 yards coming on a Tavarious Johnson touchdown run in the third quarter. Screven County (3-4, 1-2) was held to six points for the second game in a row after losing three turnovers.

Westside’s Jalen Lampkin rushed for 167 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns, while also completing 7 of 9 pass attempts for 115 yards.

Lampkin came up big early in the third quarter with Westside up 14-6. On third and 7 at midfield, he broke two tackles on a 13-yard run. Two plays later, Lampkin scrambled
left, beat two linemen to the edge, juked a defender and then cut back across the field for a 41-yard touchdown.

“Last week, (defensive coordinator Ivory) Hugee said when we take a punch we’ve got to give it right back,” Lampkin said. “We took theirs and we gave them a punch. We kept punching all night.”
