With all cylinders firing Saturday afternoon, Greenbrier rolled through the competition and took home the Area 2-AAAAA volleyball championship.
The Lady Wolfpack (26-14) entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed. They blew past Northside Warner Robins, took out Houston County in the semifinals and beat Houston County once more in the best-of-five championship match, all without dropping a game.
All-Area first team selections DeJhana Cotton and Gabbi Meyering, Greenbrier’s lone senior, were powerful with their attacks throughout the day, Cotton mostly in the middle while Meyering was virtually unstoppable from the outside.
Cotton finished the championship match with 13 kills, while Meyering added seven kills and four aces.
“Everyone was on today and that’s a huge part of it, said Meyering. “The passing was on and that’s why were able to get so many kills.”
Greenbrier junior setter Lauren Ingalls finished with 25 set assists for the match.
In the title match, the Lady Wolfpack controlled play from start to finish while winning the first two games 25-15, 25-18.
They faced some adversity in the third game, trailing 16-10 before they began to mount their comeback.
Trailing 17-14, Meyering stepped to the service line with Cotton on the bench. After two Sarah White kills, Meyering served two aces, White registered another kill then Meyering smoked two additional aces as the Lady Wolfpack took a 21-17 lead. They went on to the 25-20 win.
Greenbrier coach Debbie Born thought that while Cotton and Meyering were outstanding, it was the overall team play that propelled the Lady Wolfpack to the title and a No. 1 seed in the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAA state volleyball playoffs that begin Thursday.
“All week long we just said, ‘you do your job, whatever rotation you’re in, you do that well and we will win,’ ” Born said.
Joining Greenbrier in the state playoffs is surprise No. 7 seed Evans (4-19).
The Knights lost to Houston County but rebounded to eliminate Grovetown on Friday night.
On Saturday, they beat Northside 2-0 then beat Warner Robins 2-1. They fell just short of the championship round as they were ousted by Houston County.
