Aquinas’ ascent continues.

The Irish football team jumped one spot to No. 3 in this week’s Georgia Sports Writers Association Class A football poll. Aquinas beat Twiggs County 52-21 on Friday to improve to 4-0 this season.

The Region 7-A team was the only local representative to move up in the rankings, but rival Lincoln County did drop out of the Class A rankings following a 21-20 win against First Presbyterian.

Three other ranked area teams remained in the same poll position. In Class AAA, Washington County was third and Jefferson County was No. 5. Down in Class AA, Washington-Wilkes was again No. 5.

Expect some movement next week, however. Washington County plays Class AA No. 1 Lovett while Washington-Wilkes plays Class AA defending state champion Jefferson.
