Aquinas made a lofty season debut in this week’s high school football rankings.

The Irish (2-0), who beat previously No. 4 George Walton Academy, moved into the Georgia Sports Writers Association Class A poll at No. 5 following a wild week that shook up the Class A ranks.

Though Aquinas beat the Bulldogs 19-16 in overtime, it got help to move up so dramatically, as six ranked Class A teams lost. Rival Lincoln County was one, though it lost to Class AA Washington-Wilkes. The Tigers’ 28-14 win dropped the Red Devils to sixth and improved Washington-Wilkes by two spots to No. 7.

In Class AAA, both Washington County and Jefferson County moved up. The Golden Hawks beat Emanuel County Institute by 36 and went from No. 6 to No. 5, while the Warriors jumped three spots to seventh.

Burke County was the other ranked area team. The Bears, who beat Hephzibah 55-0 in their first game, remained No. 2 in Class AAAA.
