John Paul Newton of Thomas Jefferson Academy is this week's player of the week.

That’s when he saw the statistics posted for people to see.

“I had no clue until Monday morning when I saw the stats in the hallway,” he said.

In Thomas Jefferson’s season-opening game against Hilton Head Prep, Newton rushed for 368 yards on only 18 attempts, scoring four touchdowns. He also caught a pass for a 30-yard score, had three tackles and punted once in the Jaguars’ 62-22 win, a performance that makes him The Augusta Chronicle’s Player of the Week.

Newton did his damage by going inside and cutting, side-stepping defenders as he averaged 20.4 yards per carry. He was one of three Jaguars to run for at least 100 yards. Newton, along with Justin Haycraft and Willis Toulson, paced Thomas Jefferson’s output of 692 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.

“It was real fun,” Newton said about the impressive offensive totals. “It gets the adrenaline going.”
