Cross Creek downs Greenbrier

Cross Creek gets head coach Roberty McCarty first win

Using an opportunistic defense, the Cross Creek Razorbacks tripped up the visiting Greenbrier Wolfpack, 25-14, in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

The win was one that first-year head coach Robert McCarty will savor.

“It feels great,” McCarty said. “I told them yesterday I planned on never having a losing record and this was a critical one.”

The Razorbacks took the ball away four times from the Wolfpack, including a game-changer at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

The Wolfpack were driving in Razorback territory when Mark Slade came up with a loose ball.

The Razorbacks turned that into a eight-play, 82-yard drive that took 4:38 off the clock and increased their tenuous 12-7 lead to an 18-7 advantage.

“You can’t do that,” Greenbrier head coach Kevin Hunt about his team putting the ball on the ground. “That was a pendulum swing right there.”

The Razorbacks did their best work offensively on fourth down.

After Greenbrier struck first following the opening kickoff, the Razorbacks came right back and got within 7-6 when quarterback Tyler Darnall hit Maurice Berry
in stride down the left sideline
for a 33-yard score on fourth-and-12.

With 8:09 to play in the third quarter, Cross Creek’s Deon Kleckly took the handoff on fourth-and inches from the Greenbrier 22. He went up the middle, ran over defenders and scored a touchdown that gave the Razorbacks their first lead of the game at 12-7.

Kleckley led all rushers with 125 yards on 16 carries as the Razorbacks’ balanced attack netted 207 rushing yards. Vincent Norris had 10 carries for 51 yards and a touchdown.

In the Razorbacks’ two-quarterback system, Yusuf Jenkins came in and guided the team from the pistol as they did not attempt a pass in the second half.

Malcolm Thomas was Greenbrier’s leading rusher with 111 yards on 14 carries.
