Five area high school football teams ranked in poll

The start of the high school football season will feature a top-10 showdown between two local teams.

When Burke County visits Thomson this Friday, both the Bears and Bulldogs will hold spots in the top 10 of the Georgia Sports Writers Association Prep Football Preseason Poll. Burke County is ranked No. 3 in Class AAAA and Thomson is sixth in Class AAA. The Bulldogs beat Burke County 21-14 in 2012.

Elsewhere in the rankings, Washington County is No. 8 in Class AAA ahead of a game against Class A No. 1 Eagle’s Landing Christian, Class AA Washington-Wilkes is tied for 10th and Lincoln County is No. 3 in Class A.

All five of the area’s ranked teams won at least one state playoff game a year ago, with Burke County, Lincoln County, Thomson and Washington County each winning two.
